The Source of this Blog

In October 2013, Indiana University Press will publish my Scholar's Survival Manual.  It is drawn from my blog, This Week's Finds in Planning. Having observed scholars in action in many fields, in many universities, at many levels, I am impressed by how people let themselves by hit by oncoming trucks (saying to themselves, What me worry?) and by how some scholars are enormously productive and effective but are never "too busy." The goal of the book is to avoid being hit by an oncoming truck and to enhance your capacity to do significant work. A lot is about tenure, a lot is what might be called "toilet training," and a lot is about bureaucratic facts of life.

I gather that the first chapter will be on the Clegg-Microsoft website soon.


Martin H. Krieger has taught at Berkeley, Minnesota, MIT, Michigan, and Southern California. He has been a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and at the National Humanities Center. The Survival Manual is his ninth book.
